You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet - Part One

Watching pompous politicians, egotistical economists, arrogant investment geniuses, clueless media pundits, and self- proclaimed experts on the Great Depression predict an economic recovery and a return to normalcy would be amusing if it wasn’t so pathetic. Their lack of historical perspective does a huge disservice to the American people, as their failure to grasp the cyclical nature of history results in a broad misunderstanding of the Crisis the country is facing. The ruling class and opinion leaders are dominated by linear thinkers that believe the world progresses in a straight line. Despite all evidence of history clearly moving through cycles that repeat every eighty to one hundred years (a long human life), the present generations are always surprised by these turnings in history. I can guarantee you this country will not truly experience an economic recovery or progress for another fifteen to twenty years. If you think the last four years have been bad, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Hope is not an option. There is too much debt, too little cash-flow, too many promises, too many lies, too little common sense, too much mass delusion, too much corruption, too little trust, too much hate, too many weapons in the hands of too many crazies, and too few visionary leaders to not create an epic worldwide implosion. Too bad. We stand here in the year 2012 with no good options, only less worse options. Decades of foolishness, debt accumulation, and a materialistic feeding frenzy of delusion have left the world broke and out of options. And still our leaders accelerate the debt accumulation, while encouraging the masses to carry-on as if nothing has changed since 2008.

This $15 Trillion Dollar Party Will Eventually Lead To An Economic Collapse

from ETFDailyNews.com:
If you knew that you could live in luxury for the rest of your life but that by doing so it would absolutely destroy the future for your children, your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren would you do it? Well, that is exactly what we are doing as a nation. Over the past several decades, we have stolen 15 trillion dollars from future generations so that we could enjoy a dramatically inflated level of prosperity. Our 15 trillion dollar party has been a lot of fun, but what we have done to our children and our grandchildren has been beyond criminal. We ran up the greatest mountain of debt in the history of the planet and we are sticking them with the bill. Sadly, both political parties have been responsible for the big spending that has been going on. Both Democrats and Republicans have run up huge budget deficits when in power. But instead of learning the hard lessons of the past, both political parties continue to vote for even more debt. They would rather continue to steal trillions of dollars from future generations than have the party end and have to face the consequences.
And the consequences will be dramatic when the party ends.

Previewing The Global Monetary Firehose Through 2013

Earlier today, Fed "bad cop" Dick Fisher appeared on TV and warned Wall Street to resume doing fundamental analysis on its investments as incremental easing is now over, and expectations of shotgun monetary heroin should be henceforth curbed. While we sympathize with the views of the holder of precious metal ETFs, we can't help but be skeptical that if and when global growth returns to its negative glideslope trendline, the only option, as always, will be more real dilution, resulting in more nominal asset price gains. Furthermore, in the aftermath of Fisher's warning, Wall Street sat down and redid its analysis. What it found was that no matter what happens, the Fed, and its central banking peers, will always ease. Case in point is the just released update from Morgan Stanley on what it believes the monetary firehose will look like in the next 2 years. One word: whoooosh.

Marc Faber Previews Q2, Is Long Japan, Cautious The US And Gold, And Sees A 5-10% Increase In Inflation

Mark Faber was on Bloomberg TV earlier, presenting his latest outlook on markets and the economy, but first he summarizes 2011's first quarter which as repeatedly observed here before has so far been a mirror image of 2012, with the only different that while it ran up on 2010's QE2 back then, now it has surged on the transitory flow (not stock) impact of two back to back $1.3 trillion LTROs. "I think that if you look back at a year ago we made a peak of 1370 on S&P on May 4 and then dropped sharply to 1074 on October 4. Then we recaptured the lows in November and December. Since then, the first quarter has been very powerful and has surprised investors because of its strong performance. And I think now the expectations are very high. The market is no longer oversold the way it was in December. And everybody thinks that the race is on, go along with equities, the hedge funds have positioned themselves on the long side and optimism is high. I would be very careful at this stage." As for his outlook, he is "reluctant to short" in a money-printing environment, believes that Japan will provide the best equity futures returns (more easing from the BOJ appears imminent), is confident margins will roll over (as they already have) on the back of record for this time of year input costs, and thus thinks earnings will disappoint, sees inflation running 5-10% more than a year earlier, and is still accumulating gold every month. Overall, mostly as expected from the pony-tailed one.

The Ultimate Divergence: Birinyi's Ruler Predicts S&P At 5000 When Volume Hits Zero

In a day like today, when stocks and bonds are rallying, indicating that the market is once again convinced Fed "bad cop" Fisher was full of it, and more easing is expected (as noted earlier), and with NFP set to fall on a market holiday, thus the number, if weak, can be spun as one ushering in more QE over the weekend, one can only sit back and have fun with Birinyi's ruler. Which in turn brings us to the following conclusion: with the market in 2012 once again in a straight diagonal line, just like in early 2011, gaining 50 SPX point each month regardless of news, climatic conditions, liquidity and frankly anything else, it is quite obvious that the S&P market will hit 5000 by December 2019, a date which is also notable because as the second Birinyi ruler chart shows, that is when trading volume will officially hit zero.

Guest Post: There Is No Shortcut, But All We Have Are Shortcuts

We all know there is no shortcut to anything worth having--mastery, security, wealth-- yet all we have in America is another useless, doomed shortcut. Insolvency is scale-invariant, meaning that being unable to live within your means leads to insolvency for households, towns, corporations, states and national governments. There is no shortcut to living within one's means. Expenses must align with revenues or the debt taken on to fill the gap will eventually bankrupt the entity--even an Empire. We know this, but all we have in America is the shortcut of borrowing more to fill the gap between revenues and expenses. The Federal government is borrowing a staggering 40% of its budget this year--and it has done so for the past three years. Despite all the fantastic predictions of future solvency, the cold reality is that no plausible level of "growth" will close the gap: either expenses must be cut by $1.5 trillion or tax revenues raised by $1.5 trillion or some combination of those realities.

Start of 2nd Quarter brings Hedge Fund money flows with it

Trader Dan at Trader Dan's Market Views - 21 minutes ago
It appears from today's price action across both the equity markets and the commodity markets in general, that the beginning of the 2nd quarter is seeing hedge fund managers put money back to work across a wide variety of risk assets. The catalyst seems to be both the Chinese manufacturing data and the US manufacturing PMI data which were on the friendly side and relieved traders' concerns for at least today. Oddly enough that same PMI data showed inflation data relatively tame which generated a move higher in the bond market in spite of the risk allocation trades. Then again, with ... more »

The Bi-Partisan Criminogenic Fraudulent JOBS Bill

From All-In To All-Out: Are Macro Hedge Funds The Canary In The Stockmine?

The question of who was the marginal buyer of equities in mid February and into March appears to have been answered. It was Macro hedge funds whose correlation of returns to the S&P 500 went from a negative 0.58 on 2/15 to a very high positive 0.75. It would appear that macro funds, just as they did in Q1 of 2011, went all-in. However, just as occurred in Q1/Q2 2011, the ebbing macro backdrop of the last few weeks, as evidenced by the Citi Economic Surprise Index tumbling rapidly, appears to have stymied their risk appetite and, again just as in 2011, as the surprise index rolled over, so Macro funds started to exit the equity market very rapidly. In fact, in the last two weeks the 30-day correlation between the Macro hedge fund return index (HFRXM) and the S&P 500 (SPX) has crashed back from +0.75 to -0.55 currently as macro funds clearly shift to a negative stance of US equities in general - selling into the momentum strength of the last few weeks. As we pointed out a week ago, institutions were indeed all-in, but it seems the reality of recent macro data and European risk flares is perhaps rapidly darkening the rose-colored lens with macro-funds the first to flee.

How The Fed's Visible Hand Is Forcing Corporate Cash Mismanagement

Think the Fed's policy of market intervention is only impacting savers and investors? Think again: courtesy of ZIRP, companies are investing increasingly less in CapEx, and thus long-term growth, and merely focusing on instant bang for the buck projects, like M&A and dividends. Sustainable? You decide.

Schrodinger's Market As European Equities Surge And Credit Shrugs

On this first day of the second quarter, and especially since the US open (and the ISM print) European equities decided all was well and rallied broadly back to their highs of last week. In the meantime, credit markets (sovereigns, financials, and non-financials) sold off quite notably from a positive start and despite a small rally into the close (which sovereigns did not participate in) closed practically unchanged. It seems Schrodinger's cat is indeed present not just in Chinese PMI, US jobs data and regional surveys, but also in the risk asset markets as credit market participants are dramatically different in their views (and flows we suppose) going into this quarter. We also note that Europe's VIX has collapsed in the last few days to a more normalized level relative to US VIX.

MUST READ: Secret Freedom Fighters Working to Unseat the New World Order

by Eric Blair, Activist Post
“Apparently, the good guys now have enough tactical positioning to begin a global transformation plan, starting with cleansing the current system of the bad guys.”

There have been recent reports in the underground alternative media that a secret group of well-placed, high-ranking freedom fighters are working tirelessly to free humanity from the clutches of the evil cabal that goes by many names: the Illuminati, the New World Order or, simply, the international banksters.
On the surface, the average conspiracy researcher may feel that this seemingly all powerful cabal has nearly reached their endgame goal of full spectrum dominance of the planet. After all, the past decade has seen a massive consolidation of power for this cabal through endless aggressive wars, financial bailouts, legislation to destroy personal freedom, and so on.
However, according to reporting by David Wilcock and Benjamin Fulford, there is an equally powerful force of good working behind the scenes to combat this cabal. These freedom fighters, sometimes referred to as “white hats” or “gnostic Illuminati”, are said to occupy positions in banking and finance, military, law enforcement, media, and government at all levels, as well as other key posts in corporations and institutions.

SLAVE LABOR: Apple’s Chinese iPhone plants employ forced interns, claim campaigners

[Ed. Note: When I posted my article,What Steve Jobs Should Have Said When He Had the Chance, I made the argument that Apple has made billions of dollars the old fashioned way: With innovation and slave labor. The article was met by some with the argument that Apple is merely engaging in free market enterprise. To wit I must ask again, how is THIS the "free market"?]
by Juliette Garside, Guardian.co.uk
Students told to man production lines at Foxconn if they want to graduate, says Hong Kong-based nonprofit
Apple‘s factories in China are employing tens of thousands of students, some of them on forced internships, according to campaigners lobbying for better labour conditions at Foxconn plants, which assemble iPhones. Some students could be as young as 16.
The Foxconn chairman, Terry Gou, head of China’s largest private-sector employer – with 1.2 million workers – promised on Sunday to reduce hours and improve pay after an independent audit found multiple labour law violations at his factories.
But campaigners have accused Apple, Foxconn and the Fair Labor Association (FLA), a charitable organisation that carried out the audit published on Friday, of ignoring the issue of forced internships, where students are told they will not graduate unless they spend months working on production lines during holidays.
In December, 1,500 students were sent by just one vocational college in Henan, China’s most populous province, for internships at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant, which Apple chief executive, Tim Cook, visited last week. The Yancheng Evening News, which exposed the practice, interviewed students who said they were going against their will and that their schools were acting as “labour agencies”.

Tibet Self-Immolation Wave Among History’s Biggest

by Gillian Wong, HuffingtonPost.com:
BEIJING — Dozens of Tibetans have set themselves on fire over the past year to protest Chinese rule, sometimes drinking kerosene to make the flames explode from within, in one of the biggest waves of political self-immolations in recent history.
But the stunning protests are going largely unnoticed in the wider world – due in part to a smothering Chinese security crackdown in the region that prevents journalists from covering them.
While a single fruit seller in Tunisia who lit himself on fire in December 2010 is credited with igniting the Arab Spring democracy movement, the Tibetan self-immolations have so far failed to prompt the changes the protesters demand: an end to government interference in their religion and a return of the exiled Dalai Lama.

The World Bank Is Hopeless and Changing Leaders Won’t Help

by Tibor Machan, The Daily Bell:

Hats off to Ngozi … A golden opportunity for the rest of the world to show Barack Obama the meaning of meritocracy … When economists from the World Bank visit poor countries to dispense cash and advice, they routinely tell governments to reject cronyism and fill each important job with the best candidate available. It is good advice. The World Bank should take it. In appointing its next president, the bank’s board should reject the nominee of its most influential shareholder, America, and pick Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. – Economist
Dominant Social Theme: The World Bank is a great institution. We just need the right person to run it.
Free-Market Analysis: The World Bank is a part of a kind of “tag team” with the International Monetary Fund. The World Bank lends money to dictators and sundry thugs and then when these unsavory individuals abscond, the IMF is hauled in to make the people pay.

Monday Morning Silver and Gold

from TF Metals Report:
As we begin what will surely be another crazy and wild week, let’s spend a little time with the basics, just to be sure we’ve got our heads screwed on straight.
Let’s start with gold. First of all, the OI and the CoT. As you’ll recall, total open interest collapsed last week as the April contract expired yet there wasn’t a full rollover of OI into June. This, in itself, is strange. That total gold OI is now back to levels last seen in September of 2009 (when price was near $1100) is even more strange. As of last Thursday, total gold OI was just 406,388. This is down an extraordinary 72,656 (-15.17%) since the price and OI peak on 2/28/12. Breathtaking and amazing. As will be continued to be mentioned here to the point of exhaustion: The only entities left trading gold on the Comex are Cartel monkeys and HFT-Algo WOPRS. The monkeys can paint the tape and the charts to trigger either buying or selling from the brainless WOPRs and profit in both directions. That this is currently the accepted mechanism for “pricing” the only true and historic measure of money and wealth in the world is literally astounding and, frankly, criminal.

Geithner Wants To Get Rid of Physical Currency (Better Tracking)

By Gary North, GaryNorth.com
Timothy Geithner, the Secretary of the Treasury, wants to get rid of paper money. He says it’s part of a cost-cutting measure.
Nonsense. It’s part of the government’s attempt to track our purchases. Its a plan to get rid of the underground economy, where people buy what they want, sell what they want, and leave no digital trail.
The government cannot control the cash markets. It wants to tax them. But paper money resists taxation.

Silver Forming Head and Shoulders Bottom Pattern

by Dr. Clive Maund, The Market Oracle:
Silver is marking out a Head-and-Shoulders pattern that parallels the one forming in gold, but whereas the one in gold is classified as a Head-and-Shoulders continuation pattern, the one in silver is classified as a Head-and-Shoulders bottom. The reason for this difference is that the pattern in gold has formed not very far beneath the highs, and thus comparatively does not have much of a loss to reverse, whereas the pattern in silver has got quite a lot to reverse, as can be seen by comparing the 15-month chart for silver shown here with the 1-year charts for gold presented in the Gold Market update.
On its 15-month chart we can see that although silver did not succeed in breaking out of its downtrend on the rally in February, which is thus still in force, its action at that time was nevertheless bullish, as it climbed well above its highs of last November, which is taken to signify a potential change of trend from down to neutral, so that the pattern that has formed from the September panic lows to the present looks very much like a Head-and-Shoulders bottom, with the price having dropped down in March to form the Right Shoulder low of the pattern.

GhettoPhysics documentary reveals the gang structure of power that dominates politics, finance, corporations and business

by Mike Adams, Natural News:
There’s an absolutely stunning new documentary hitting the streets right now called GhettoPhysics. Brought to you by the co-creator of What the Bleep Do We Know?!, it reveals an understanding of society that parallels my own thinking on the matter: That every institution, every government, every corporation and every group of people is really just a GANG — and all gangs routinely try to increase their own power by suppressing everyone else.
This is an extraordinary film with a powerful message. I was actually thinking of writing a feature article about all this myself called, “The WHITE gangs you never see on the streets” that would expose the gang mentality of Goldman Sachs, the FDA, corrupt local police departments, the DEA, global banks and a whole lot more. But this film beat me to it: GhettoPhysics is an explosive, gut-churning revelation of truth about the gang mentality that’s deeply embedded in human behavior.

Jim Grant: ‘gold price is the reciprocal of faith in central banks’

from Gold Money:
Up, down, and back up again: that about sums up the action in the gold and silver markets last week, though neither bulls nor bears were strong enough to move the gold price out of its trading range between $1,650-$1,680. Likewise, the silver price continues to trade in a range from $31-$33.
The indecisiveness in the metals is mirroring broader market ambiguities. German unemployment is now at a record post-reunification low, yet it’s been reported this morning that total eurozone unemployment stands at a 25-year high of 10.8%. In Italy, unemployment rose from 9.1% to 9.3% January to February – its highest level since 2004. The division between the German “core” and the Med countries (plus Ireland) grows ever wider…
As for America, Barry Ritholtz posts good comment on Wall Street’s love of easy money, noting the combination of “extraordinary skills and stupendous luck” that it will take to return monetary policy “to some semblance of normalcy”. The humorous and informative James Grant remains just as sceptical, noting in the CNBC video below that “gold has more upside” because of these difficulties. Sorry Rothschilds: BRICs Bank To Rival World Bank and IMF and Challenge Dollar Dominance

from GoldCore:

Outgoing President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, after just three days ago dismissing the idea of a BRICs created, new global multi lateral bank, has come around and endorsed a BRICs bank in an interview with the FT.
Zoellick had initially said that a BRICs bank and potential rival to the western and U.S. dominated IMF and World Bank, would be difficult to implement given competing BRIC interests.
He acknowledged that a BRICs bank was being created and said that the World Bank supported such a bank. He said that not having Russia and China as part of “the World Bank system” would be a “mistake of historic proportions”.
Leaders of the BRICS nations meeting in India appear to have made much progress in creating a new global bank as the emerging economies seek to convert their growing economic might into collective diplomatic influence.
The five countries now account for nearly 28% of the global economy, a figure that is expected to continue to grow.

21 Signs That The UK Is Being Transformed Into A Hellish Big Brother Surveillance Society

from The American Dream:
Why would anyone want to live in the UK at this point?  Well, if you enjoy having every little detail of your life dictated to you by elitist control freaks then you might like living there.  But most of the rest of the world is absolutely horrified that the UK is being transformed into a hellish Big Brother surveillance society.  The UK truly is on the “cutting edge” when it comes to implementing liberty-killing rules and regulations. Many have pointed out that the United States is becoming a Big Brother police state, but the truth is that the UK is even worse.  The madness going on in the UK is where the rest of the world is headed.  Right now, there are more surveillance cameras per capita in the UK than anywhere else in the world.  If you accidentally drop a couple of potato chips in public or if you whisper a phrase that is not politically correct in a restaurant there is a good chance that you will be hauled into court.  In the UK, the public has been sold the lie that society will be better off if everything and everyone is constantly monitored.  But instead of improving society, what all of this surveillance is really doing is turning the entire nation into a very frightening version of George Orwell’s 1984.
Sadly, most of the rest of the globe is going down the exact same path that the UK has gone.  The UK is several years ahead of most of the rest of us, but eventually almost every nation on earth will be just like them.
The following are 21 signs that the UK is being transformed into a hellish Big Brother surveillance society….
#1 A new UK law will allow the government “listening agency” to openly monitor all phone calls, all emails, all website visits, all Facebook status updates and all text messages.

Ayn Rand’s Case for Human Liberty

by Tibor Machan, The Daily Bell:

Although most libertarians and classical liberals are champions of human (individual) liberty, the reasons they give vary. Some are utilitarians and hold, along with John Stuart Mill, that when free, men and women are most likely to advance the cause of the greatest happiness of the greatest number; some are Christians and hold that unless the virtuous life is freely chosen, one will not gain (God’s) credit for doing what is right; some hold that human freedom is a precondition of prosperity and progress and other good things.
Ayn Rand, the Russian-American novelist-philosopher, has advanced a line of argument in defense of individual liberty that draws a bit on all of these although hers is really a secular version of what the Christians believe. She believed that only free men and women are capable of choosing their conduct and of taking credit for doing so properly or being blameworthy for failing to do so. In other words, Rand argued that human freedom is a necessary precondition for living a morally significant life. This, ironically, is something Rand had in common with Immanuel Kant, a philosopher whose views Rand found offensive.

BRICs Bank To Rival World Bank And IMF And Challenge Dollar Dominance

On Thursday morning, President Hu Jintao of China, President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia , President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India shook hands at the start of the one day meeting in New Delhi. Top of the agenda was the creation of the grouping's first institution, a so-called "BRICS Bank" that would fund development projects and infrastructure in developing nations. Less noticed and commented upon is the aspirations of the BRIC nations to become less dependent on the global reserve currency, the dollar and to position their own currencies as internationally traded currencies. The leaders of BRIC nations and other emerging market nations have adopted the idea of conducting trade between the five nations in their own currencies. Two agreements, signed among the development banks of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, say that local currency loans will be made available for trade between these countries. The five fast growing nations participating in local currency trade will allow participants to diversify their foreign exchange reserves, hedging against the growing risk of a euro or dollar crisis. The BRICS want to have easy convertibility of currency to make it easier to use the real, ruble, rupee, renminbi and rand amongst themselves without having to always use the US dollar. Higher intra-Brics trade, conducted in their own currencies would shield their economies from economic dislocations in the west. Left unsaid so far is the possibility that one of the BRICs or the BRICs in unison might peg the value of their respective currencies to the ultimate store of value and money - gold.

Greece Set To Default On Foreign-Law Bonds On May 15

Back in January, when we wrote "Subordination 101: A Walk Thru For Sovereign Bond Markets In A Post-Greek Default World", we said that "because while the bulk of the bonds, or what is now becoming obvious is the junior class, can be impaired with impunity (pardon the pun), it is the UK-law, or the non-domestic indenture, bonds, which are the de facto fulcrum security."  In other words, from the very beginning the ball game was all about the non-Greek law bonds, whose indentures make it impossible for a non-makewhole take out settlement. Alas, we underestimated the stupidity of the European authorities who in their pursuit of a prompt if messy conclusion to the Greek restructuring, which ended up with a CDS trigger, were left with a tranching of the Greek balance sheet into a ridiculous seven classes, which crammed down the Greek law bonds into yet another separate class, an outcome which will shortly bite the European pre-petition sovereign market (i.e., Portugal, Spain and Italy) in the ass. What we did not however underestimate at all, is the critical value of strong indenture provisions, or, in other words, the willingness of UK-law bondholders to not comply with terms forced down their throat. As reported earlier today by the Greek Ministry of Finance, a whopping 20 of 36 classes of non-Greek law bonds have rejected the nation's attempts to restructure, and now appear set for an epic legal showdown, whose outcome will determine whether or not the UK non-UK law spread will explode, or if the entire European bond market will shoot itself in the foot itself, after all strong indentures appear to be merely a bond prosectus placeholder which will never be honored. Most importantly, we are delighted that UK-law bonds have understood one thing - by being the fulcrum security as we said, they have all the leverage. If Greece thinks it can take them in court and not pay them anything, well that may well be the ballgame for the European bond market.

Guest Post: Understanding The Slave Mentality

In the initial stages of nearly every recorded tyranny, the saucer eyed dumbstruck masses exhibit astonishing and masterful skill when denying reality.  The facts behind their dire circumstances and of their antagonistic government become a source of cynical psychological gameplay rather than a source of legitimate concern.  Their desperate need to maintain their normalcy bias creates a memory and observation vacuum in which all that runs counter to their false assumptions and preconceptions disappears forever.  It is as if they truly cannot see the color of the sky, or the boot on their face.  The concrete world of truth becomes a dream, an illusion that can be heeded or completely ignored depending on one’s mood.  For them, life is a constant struggle of dissociation, where the tangible is NOT welcome… This is the problem that we in the Liberty Movement deal with most often in our writings and films.  Our confrontation with willful ignorance has been epic, even by far reaching historical standards.  The gains in social awareness have been substantial, and yet the obstacles are incredible.  Unprecedented.  As an activist trend, we have an almost obsessive drive to draw back the curtain so that the public has at least the opportunity to see what is on the other side.  Unfortunately, there is another danger that must be taken into account…

ISM Beats Expectations Modestly As Construction Spending Slides

The ISM Manufacturing Index, which in the aftermath of last week's weak Chicago PMI was whispered to be a miss, came at 53.4, on expectations of 53.0, up from 52.4 in February, once again continuing the narrative of a Schrodinger economic reality. While Production and Employment both rose, New Order declined from 54.9 to 54.5; What is truly suspect is that Prices dropped also from 61.5 to 61.0, putting the validity of this report in question especially following the explosion in the Chicago PMI prices paid. Perhaps HSBC was responsible for that particular report too? In other news, Construction Spending plunged from an unrevised -0.1% (revised to -0.8%) to -1.1% on expectations of a rise to 0.6%, the lowest print since July 2011. All in all, a release pair as expected, affording Bernanke the ability to be easy if need be, although giving stocks enough pump to offset weakness from Europe and Japan.

Meet The Uber-Kommissar: Germany Expands European Domination Plan; Will Enact European Budget Supervision Panel

Greece was the beta test. Now Germany, whose plan to enact a European fiscal pact in exchange for soaring Bundesbank and economic support of the PIIGS has so far delayed the inevitable, is seeking wider powers to "supervise" European budget compliance with the terms of Merkel and Schauble's fiscal pact. Spiegel writes that "Schäuble plans to propose creating independent panels of experts at both the national and EU level, who would monitor fiscal policies in the member states, the euro zone and the EU as a whole. They would be responsible for sounding a warning if they see governments' budgetary policies straying off course." Those in charge of the panels? Academics - the same people who are in charge of the Federal Reserve (with stunning success we forgot to mention). Because having a Ph.D. is sufficient and necessary to be a central planner. As for the role of the uber-commissioner? He would be able to implement EU regulations (proposed by Germany) "without the other commissioners or the Commission president having the right to object." And there goes sovereignty, without even one shot fired.

Italian Banks Underwater On LTRO2 After Just One Month

As 2Y Italian Bond yields nudge back up against 3% again, the sad euphoria of an ECB-funded cheap loan Sarkozy-Carry-trade in short-dated Italian debt is now a losing proposition for Italian banks. Even accounting for the month of carry earned on the position, the Mark-to-Market on any short-dated (less-than-three-year maturity) Italian government bond purchased with LTRO funds is now a drag on Italian bank balance sheets. Spain, of course, is even worse. The somewhat dashed hopes for an LTRO3, given the ever-diminished pile of performing collateral (and the Bundesbank/ECB split on acceptable collateral), suggests the situation is likely to only get worse leaving the defection-strategy - sell yr BTPS - (no matter its contagious impact on the sovereign itself) as optimal for Italian banks to avoid further forced balance sheets losses (which of course it won't since these bonds are never MtM'd and accrued at Par in the banking books we are sure).

Ever Less Bang For The Printed Buck

As markets crave their next fix of the money-printing elixir, perhaps it is worth noting the ever-decreasing impact that the quantitative easing experiments have had on 'measures' of the real economy. This seems to suggest that either: "we're gonna need a bigger boat" and the ongoing QEs will need to be exponentially larger than the prior in order to enact change in the 'measures' of real economy; or, the Fed has hit its limit as yet another 'multiplier effect' has been proved wrong in the limit and all we get to play with is the unintended consequences of a hidden inflation peering into view. Of course this is typical Keynesian dogma: if at first you don't succeed, do it again but bigger, more global, and with more geopolitical danger.

More Fed "Bad Cop"

Bernanke telling the world the Fed will ease any time there is a stock downtick is the 'good cop.' Which means there needs to be a bad cop to pretend that the Fed actually cares about more than just 10-20% red candles in the Russell 2000, and to give the impression of a balanced Fed. Last week it was Plosser (who simply regurgitated his script from March 2010). Today it is Dallas Fed's Fisher. From Bloomberg:
  • FED'S FISHER SAYS U.S. ECONOMY IS IMPROVING
  • FED'S FISHER SAYS U.S. ECONOMY IS IMPROVING
  • FED'S FISHER SAYS LATE 2014 INTEREST RATE PLEDGE WILL NEED TO BE ADJUSTED
  • FISHER SAYS FED SHOULD `SIT, WAIT AND WATCH' ON POLICY
  • FISHER SEES TIME OF `SURVIVAL OF THE FATTEST' NOT FITTEST
  • And finally: FISHER SAYS FED HAS `DONE ENOUGH' IN EASING
All great stuff, and truly Oscar worthy, in the daily Fed theater. Also, all 100% irrelevant.

The True French Debt To GDP: 146%

In my continuing attempt to debunk what the European Union presents as facts; I turn my attention to France. I have already given you the correct debt to GDP ratios for Spain, Italy, Portugal and Germany which follows the exact principles of what any corporation in America or Europe would be mandated to report or suffer the slings and arrows of being held accountable for Fraud. I include contingent liabilities, derivatives, promises to pay, various guarantees and all of the normal accounting practices to be considered on any balance sheet except the sovereign nations of Europe. In the end, of course, it is your decision but at least we can begin any consideration based upon the facts and not based upon a fictitious account. Again, I divide up the liabilities into two categories, their national obligations and their European obligations; the European Union, the European Central Bank and finally for the other European institutions for which they bear some burden. Then I add it all up, divide by their GDP and we arrive at a factual accounting. Nothing complicated here except sleuthing about to get the data which is no easy task as it is hidden in various nooks and crannies.

Daily US Opening News And Market Re-Cap: April 2

European cash equities are seen mixed as the market heads into the US session, with the DAX index the only bourse to trade higher at the midpoint of the European session. European markets were seeing some gains following the open after the weekend release of better than expected Chinese manufacturing data, however the main price action of the day occurred after some European press reports that the Bundesbank had stopped accepting sovereign bonds as collateral from Portugal, Ireland and Greece garnered attention, however the Bundesbank were quick to deny reports and state that it continues to accept all Eurozone sovereign bonds. Following the denial, participants witnessed a slight bounceback, but failed to push most markets into the green.  Data releases from Europe so far have been varied, with outperformance seen in the UK Manufacturing PMI, beating expectations and recording its highest reading since May of 2011. However, the French manufacturing PMI came in below expectations, weighing on the CAC index as the session progresses. A further release from the Eurozone has shown February unemployment coming in alongside expectations recording a slight increase from January to 10.8%.

  • EU wants G20 to boost IMF funds after Eurogroup move (Reuters)
  • Euro Leaders Seek Global Help After Firewall Boosted (Bloomberg)

  • Japan Tankan Stagnates With Yen Seen as Threat (Bloomberg)
  • Fed to buy $44 billion Treasuries in April, sell $43 billion (Reuters)

Overnight Sentiment: Optimism Waning

The main event of the past 48 hours: the Chinese "Schrodinger" PMI, which came much weaker or stronger, depending on whether one uses the HSBC or official data (which always has a seasonal jump from February into March) has been forgotten. Any bullish sentiment from a 'hard landing-refuting' PMI (which incidentally means less chance of easing), was erased following a very weak Japanese Tankan sentiment report, which saw exporters fret about a return to Yen strength. Naturally, the market response was to immediately shift hopes and dreams of more easing to the BOJ, if the PBOC is for the time being off the hook. Alas, since the BOJ's actions have traditionally had much less impact on global markets, stocks are not happy. This was followed by a bevy of Eurozone data, where unemployment rose to 10.8% from 10.7%. And while this deterioration was expected, the slide in French PMI was not, dropping from 47.6 to 46.7, on expectations of an unchanged print. The modest bounce in German PMI and especially in the UK from 51.5 to 52.7, where QE is raging, were not enough to offset fears that it is now "France's turn" and that global PMIs are once again showing that the recent $2 trillion in global liquidity equivalent injections have already peaked, in line with expectations: after all the half life of central planning interventions is getting progressively shorter.

Previewing This Week's Key Macro Events

The week ahead will offer significant inputs to our views. ISM and payrolls will likely set the market tone for the next few weeks. Despite the softer signals from regional surveys, Goldman expects the ISM to improve at the margin relative to last month’s print. In contrast, it expects payrolls to grow by 175k, down from last month’s 227k jobs gain. FOMC minutes will likely show that Fed officials had a discussion on further easing but are unlikely to offer strong hints about the likelihood and possible timing of a third round of Quantitative Easing.

On Gold, A Cracked Dam, And The Fed's Small Thumb

The United States of America (and the rest of the world for that matter) has not fundamentally grown much at all over the last 40 years. We have instead replaced fundamental growth with the illusion of growth brought on by constantly increasing the monetary supply, aka, inflation. But like any good Ponzi scheme, even this one has a limit and investors briefly approached it in 2008.  When it looked like our global banking system was going to collapse, investors started dumping everything in site, essentially a de facto rejection of dollar based assets.  Alas, this terrible 'fiat' system is finally coming to its' inevitable end.  And good riddance at that. The death of fiat money will be the best thing to happen to human freedom and liberty in over 100 years.  However, you must realize that the deflation associated with the collapse of the dollar-based fiat monetary system will wipe out decades worth of false asset price growth in a very short time.  Think days or months.

On Goldman's Fascination With Pimping And Prostitution
Overnight, the NYT's Nicholas Kristof penned an article which exposes Goldman, already deeply embroiled in muppetgate damage control, as being a 16% indirect owner in Backpage, an "emporium for girls and women - some under age or forced into prostitution... which has 70 percent of the market for prostitution ads, according to AIM Group, a trade organization." " Yet some may be surprised to learn that this is not the firm's only expansion into the world of monetized prostitution. As the chart below shows, as of Q4, 2011, the firm also happens to be the top ten owner of Adult Friend Finder (Nasdaq: FFN), a company which recently went public, and which is nothing more than a porn portal for women, who can sell their "assets" to the highest bidder.

Fast Forward Through Fiat's Fantastic Fabrications

The Market Will Be Well Positioned For Any Fed Policy Change

Eric De Groot at Eric De Groot - 1 hour ago

The curtain of negative headlines hides bullish money flows in the bond and currency market. Yesterday, I suggested that Bill Gross's assertion that the U.S. Federal Reserve will likely hint at a third round of bond purchases, better known as "quantitative easing," at the coming meeting in Jackson Hole finds support in the bond market. The bond market diffusion index (DI), a cumulative measure... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Guest Post: A Postmortem Of Niall Ferguson's Otherwise Epic Lecture: Empires On The Edge Of Chaos

A few words on this IMO must watch lecture - Niall Ferguson: Empires on the Edge of Chaos  While Fergie is brilliant in his historical analysis, he gets a few niggling points wrong - Which I suspect is in part from having an Anglocentric viewpoint, which leads one to ignore some fairly hushed up (by the MSM) points of the good 'ol US of A, and in part from his rather British nature of believing in above all else, order, honoring of contracts, rule of law, and other quaint genteel notions of civil society.

Times Three: That's How Much The BLS Upwardly Fudges Data During An Election Year

That the BLS perpetually distorts and manipulates data is no secret and has been reported previously both here and elsewhere numerous times. That the BLS also has a habit of leaking critical market moving data to various entities is also well known. However, we had yet to see just what the BLS is capable of when it comes to fudging and outright slaughtering economic data in a presidential election year. The result is nothing short of a 3 sigma stunner.

Schrödinger Goes To Shanghai - Finds Economy Both Alive And Dead

Back in February we were quite amused by conflicting internal and external reports of manufacturing growth in China, which according to the HSBC Markit Manufacturing PMI index had contracted for a 4th consecutive month even as the official Chinese PMI data showed 3 consecutive expansions. It just happened again, only this time the spread between the two indices has jumped to the second highest ever, with the official PMI index surging to 53.1, an expansionary number, an eleven month high while according to HSBC it slid to 48.3, indicative of contraction, and paradoxically indicating that in "the first quarter as a whole, the index averaged its lowest reading since Q1 2009." In other words, the Schrödinger paradox - where the economy was doing better and worse at the same time - which was experienced for the past three months in the US (and is now finished with the economy rolling over), has shifted to Shanghai, where it is now the PBOC's turn to baffle all with bullshit. Why? One simple reason: despite what everyone believes, China still has residual and quite strong pockets of inflation. So while the world may be expecting an RRR, or even interest rate, cut any second now (just as China surprised everyone literally house before the November the global FX swap line expansion by the Fed in November 2011), the PBOC is just not sure it can afford the spike in inflation, or even perception thereof.

Agenda 21: The Wrenching Transformation of America

from JudgeNapolitanoFTW :
Tom DeWeese, the founder and director of the American Policy Center informs an audience in Albany, NY about the origins of Agenda 21, the central planning strategy that has grown out of the United Nations since 1993 to become soft law in the cities and counties across America to control all facets of the economy for an international redistribution of wealth.
This United Nations program lays out a comprehensive plan of sustainable development locally, nationally, and globally in every area where humans affect the environment. Basically it’s the UN’s plan to establish control over all human activity, including man’s reputed contribution to climate change. The UN is at the hub of a global network working to submerge the independence of all nations in a world government controlled by the elites, and JBS calls for the U.S. to get out of the U.N.

Federal Reserve’s “Economic Cliff” Looms Ever Closer…

from The Ulsterman Report:

Being drowned out by the Obama race-baiting campaign surrounding the Treyvon Martin shooting is Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s public admission this past week that the United States economy is once again on the brink of collapse.
A Chicago Tribune editorial put the dire warning this way:
In a Leap Day monologue to a House committee, the Federal Reserve chairman warned that, unless someone actually does something, a cascade of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled for January will, together, wash this lightweight economic recovery over his metaphorical cliff. Bernanke is too prim an academic to say, “Then you can kiss your GDP goodbye,” but he came close: The removal of so much money from the day-to-day U.S. economy, he said, could trigger another financial crisis, spike interest rates up, and drive growth down.

Central Banks Stockpiling Gold & Governments Hoarding Oil

from King World News:
With gold and silver set up for a big move this week, today King World News interviewed 40 year veteran, Robert Fitzwilson. Fitzwilson is founder of The Portola Group, one of the premier boutique firms in the Unites States. He told KWN that investors need to accumulate key assets while they remain undervalued. Fitzwilson also said gold, silver and oil are being hoarded by a combinations of central banks and governments. Here is what Fitzwilson had to say: “It is critical that people distinguish between price and value. As prices fall and ‘utility’ stays the same, that is what creates greater value. In the case of oil, gold and silver, not only is the utility holding steady, but it is actually rising.”

No More Viagra For Mario Monti And His Ilk

from Testosterone Pit.com:
Economic, regulatory, and entitlement reforms are tough. While they’re supposed to open opportunities, put budgets on sounder footing, or make the economy more competitive, they invariably cut into the flesh of some groups, who then react with demonstrations and strikes to draw attention to their plight and put pressure on the reformers to preserve the status quo.
This has been happening across the Eurozone wherever major reforms have been attempted. People in those demonstrations may speak of revolution—meaning a radical change. But they want the opposite: preserve the existing system. So it’s complicated. Greece is a salient example with impressive TV footage of street battles, Molotov cocktails, and burning buildings. In other countries, France for instance, reforms have been greeted with peaceful demonstrations and more disruptively, with massive transportation strikes that throw innocent bystanders, such as businesses, commuters, and travelers, into utter chaos, sometimes for days.
But now the perhaps most tongue-in-cheek effort will take place in Italy where unelected technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti and his government are trying to liberalize the economy and create conditions for growth by reforming a whole slew of professions whose insiders are protected by regulatory barriers to entry.

from thevictoryreport1 :

Despite every effort by governments, the gap between rich and poor continues to grow. It is now the biggest it has even been in history. FLASHBACK 2011: Gold PAPER to PHYSICAL Ratio is a Stunning 100:1 – 2012 Will be the Year of Delivery | Ned Naylor-Leyland

from Cheviot via Commodity Online:
If gold traders of the futures markets need any more convincing to invest in physical gold, Ned Naylor-Leyland has one- the paper to physical ratio. Simply put- the number of open positions for just 1 bar of gold.
Ned Naylor-Leyland is the investment director at Cheviot Asset Management
In an interview with CNBC, Ned says that there is about a 100 open positions in the gold paper market for just 1 bar of physical gold. “The numbers are pretty frightening”.
This means that there are a 100 people who have electronically “bought” gold but there is just 1 bar of gold. Need any more reason to switch to physical.
Ned goes on to add that he believes 2012 will be the year of delivery. As people start to realize the importance of owning gold, more and more investors will put their money in the physical gold.

US MARKETS
We lie, you swear to it. That up until now has been the creed of elitist Wall Street. That may be changing to it is every man for himself. We, after months of MF Global lies, have now been told that during the last days of MF, its CEO Jon Corzine, was in direct contact with JP Morgan Chase and arranged the transfer of funds from MF to JPM. This is contrary to what he told Congress and the world. Could it be that the wall of silence on Wall Street is about to be broken? Could it be the criminal syndicate is about to be broken? We do not know but it could all become criminal. JPM obviously decided they could no longer cover for Corzine without getting themselves in trouble. Corzine was the crook who kept repeating he didn‘t know where billions of dollars went. How could they, as master crooks, believe they were going to get away with such a fraud?
The housing recovery seems to have been a temporary affair. Preliminary data frames March as weak as last October. It looks like lower interest rates boasted sales. Those rates are up from 4.72% to 5.02%. Worse yet, Operation Twist is over. That is where the Fed sold the short end of the bond market and bought notes and bonds of 5, 7, 10 and 30 years. Even though the BIS, The Bank for International Settlements, said the program was a resounding success, it was not. American friends knew the Fed was a buyer, so they proceeded in selling long dated paper destroying what the Fed policy was trying to accomplish. Now we expect QE 3, which we have expected for sometime. Lest we not forget the slight easing of credit and the government’s FHA low down payment programs.

Spiegel Says “Even a 1-Trillion Euro Firewall Wouldn’t Be Enough”

by Mike Shedlock Global Economic Analysis:
Eurozone bureaucrats keep upping the ante as to how big a “firewall” is needed. And at every critical juncture, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has proven she is nothing but a liar. With every demand for additional firepower, comes an inevitable cave-in from Merkel supporting the move, no matter what she says in advance.
Meanwhile, the entire idea that firewalls can accomplish anything is ludicrous, given the key point that no currency unions in the absence of fiscal unions cannot and will not work.
I suspect Merkel understands this, merely wanting to get Germany so deep into bailouts step by step, that it will be reluctant to leave the Eurozone.
It is high time the German Supreme court step in and stop this nonsense.
However, nothing can stop Greece, Portugal, and Spain from leaving, and eventually they will. In the meantime, rest assured that every increase in firepower will be additional money of German citizens’ pockets. The end-game will be a currency or banking crisis at the worst possible time.

The Eye Of The Hurricane Passes: Full List Of European Known Knowns As The New Quarter Begins

It appears that these days a EUR1 trillion hot liquidity injection (such as that from the ECB's LTRO 1+2) will buy you about 3 months of breathing room. Then the ostriches have no choice but to pull their head out of the sand, especially in Europe, where after three months of spread tightening, and hence the belief that "all is fixed", things are starting to turn ugly again: sovereign government spreads are beginning to widen, Europe is demanding more money from the IMF (i.e. America, even as the BRIC countries are starting to consider a world without the USD as a reserve currency, and are now forming their own bank) to boost its firewall, strikes are promptly converting to riots, Italian bank stocks are being halted due to rapid moves lower, the LTRO stigma trade is at 2012 wides, in short everything we grew to know and love in Q3 and Q4 of 2011. Ironically, having papered over the symptoms courtesy of fresh new money, the underlying causes were never addressed, and only got worse as the deteriorating European economic data suggests. What is scary, as UBS shows, is that this is just the delayed carryover from 2011! Just like the US which had the benefit of abnormally warm weather to mask a "bounce" in the economy which was never structural, so Europe had a relatively quiet quarter in terms of newsflow. Things are about to change: read the following for why the eye of the hurricane is about to pass over Europe and why this time around there is $1.3 trillion less in firepower to delay the onset of reality.

From Elastic Economics To Elastic Money: The True "Economic" Underpinnings Of The Status Quo

Wonder why the premise of a Gross Domestic Product is bunk? Wonder why politicians care first, foremost and only about bailing out banks, with little thought put to actually saving that core driver which according to economic canon is responsible for 70% of GDP? Wonder why the status quo is more threatened by a gold, or any kind of standard, that limits the potential of infinite dilution of nominal concepts? The Privateer's Bill Buckler expains, in three short paragraphs, the great lies that are Elastic Economics and Elastic Money, and why everything else is noise.

A Tale of Two Bens

from Azizonomics:

Paul Krugman has an interesting post up on Ben Bernanke’s contrasting economic policy positions. Simply, the younger Bernanke was much more Krugmanite than the older Bernanke:
[The younger Bernanke] endorsed, at least as possibilities:
– Targeting long-term interest rates
– Currency depreciation
– Money financed deficit spending
– A Krugman-style inflation target

After 2003, however, his menu seemed to have been reduced to:
– Guidance on future short-term rates (the rates the Fed sets)
– Purchases of long-term bonds and other non-conventional assets
– “Oversupplying reserves”, that is, just pushing up the monetary base

Krugman concludes — quite rightly — that Bernanke has been “assimilated by the Fedborg.” Krugman should probably know that Ben’s main goal has nothing whatever to do with inflation, or “aggregate demand” or currency depreciation. Nothing. These are all handmaidens to one thing: the rate that the Treasury is paying on its debt.

Market Rigging Gets Too Obvious

by Chris Powell, GATA, GoldSeek.com:
Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:
Nothing has been more disappointing and frustrating to GATA in its nearly 13 years of fighting gold and silver market manipulation than the refusal to acknowledge the issue by many of those who have affected to be devoted friends of the monetary metals and free markets.
GATA Chairman Bill Murphy long has called this the Not Invented Here Syndrome, a matter of the intellectual vanity of prima donnas who can’t bring themselves to admit that mere upstarts might discover anything profound in the prima donnas’ field. From 45 years in journalism the experience of your secretary/treasurer is that most endeavors are full of people whose success has made them so arrogant that they think that nothing could be happening if they don’t know about it already. (While journalism inclines its practitioners to the exactly opposite position — to realize every day how much more they don’t know — it doesn’t necessarily give them the courage to report what they learn.)
So how delightful it is to discover that two people of great prominence in the gold community have come round — one completely, one mostly — even if it has taken a long time.

On Stress and our Fear of Change

by Charles Hugh Smith, Of Two Minds:
We naturally fear change and transformation, but there is a more sinister source of our chronic stress.
Yesterday I addressed the stress created by the disconnect between official happy-talk and the reality we are experiencing: The Phony “Economic Recovery,” Stress and “Losing It”. The devolution of the Status Quo is stressful, and we naturally fear this process because what happens next is unknown. As correspondent David P. observes, all change is stressful, even the positive type. But David identifies another source of chronic stress/fear:

Why Regulation Is Good For Growth

By forcing private firms and individuals into spending money on things they don’t believe they need, government can create demand, which will lead to jobs via the magic of Keynesian multipliers. Central planners know better than individuals and businesses. That is because they tend to be better educated, having attended the best schools and universities. Central planners tend to think about the bigger economic picture, while businessmen and individuals tend to have small parochial horizons. They are simply not qualified to know how to spend their money. The biggest problem with “free” markets is the stupidity of the common people. How can they possibly know what they want, or what they want to achieve when they have not attended prestigious universities like Oxford, Harvard, or Yale? Without help from central planners working with fact-based information derived from simulations, mathematical models, and empirical studies the common people will never be able to make informed economic choices. Thanks to the genius of central planning for the common good — as well as the hard work and self-sacrifice of central planners — the common people are liberated from making difficult economic decisions.
