Why the Financial System Could Indeed Collapse

from Gains Pains & Capital:
In order to understand why we’re at risk of the financial system collapsing, you first need to understand how the global banking system works. When you or I buy an asset (say a house, or shares in a stock, or a Treasury bond), we do so because we’re looking to increase our wealth through either capital gains or through the income that asset will pay us in exchange for us parking our capital there. In simple terms, you’re putting/ lending your money somewhere (especially if you’re buying a bond) in the hope of increasing the value or your money.
This is not how banks work. When a bank buys something, especially a bond, it parks that bond on its balance sheet as an “asset.” It then lends money out against that asset. This in of itself is not problematic except for the fact that the financial modeling of 99% of banks base assume that sovereign bonds are “risk-free.” Put another way, these models assume that the banks will always get their money back on 100 cents on the Dollar.
Yes, you read that correctly, despite the fact that world history is replete with examples of sovereign defaults (in the last 20 years alone we’ve seen more than 15 including countries as significant as Russia, Argentina, and Brazil), most banks assume that the sovereign bonds sitting on their balance sheets are risk free.

Germany must decide if it wants to save the euro

by Jim O’Neill, The Telegraph:
Berlin and the ECB hold the key to the future of the single currency. Will the latest crisis finally force their hand?
So, the big question is – how do you solve the Spanish crisis? In fact, how do you solve the whole euro crisis?
The simple answer is, first, I don’t think there is anything much more Spain can do. Second, the solution to Spain’s dilemma is, I believe, the solution to the euro problem.
Unfortunately, it still appears as though Europe’s top policymakers – that is, the Germans – are trying to “muddle through”, as opposed to coming up with a good, powerful solution.
To understand this situation, it is instructive to reflect on Spain’s “problems” in comparison with those of Greece and perhaps Ireland.
While Spain’s widely cited problems of high unit labour costs and current account deficit are symptoms of it sitting inside a rigid currency zone, before 2007-08 these problems existed but were not highlighted. They were seen as an understandable consequence of a monetary union such as the euro area.

Sanctions Take Effect: Iran Begins Stockpiling Food

from Info Wars:
With financial sanctions against it getting tighter and tighter and the drums of war beating louder and louder, Iran appears to be getting proactive — at least on the food front. As Reuters reports, Tehran is busy stockpiling grain in anticipation of the sanctions’ effect on daily life. From the Reuters report:
Vessels carrying at least 360,000 metric tonnes (396,832 tons) of grain are lined up to unload in Iran, Reuters shipping data showed on Thursday, a sign that Tehran is succeeding in stockpiling food to blunt the impact of tougher Western sanctions.
Iran has been shopping for wheat at a frantic pace, ordering a large part of its expected yearly requirement in a little over one month and paying a premium in non-dollar currencies to work around toughened Western sanctions and avoid social unrest.

Draghi – We Will Continue to Fight Until Everyone is Dead

by Bruce Krasting, Bruce Krasting Blog:
A week ago I cut a EURUSD short position that was well into the money. (Link)I was concerned that “something” might happen that could make a mess. I listed a number of concerns that might have caused a flip-flop, but Mario Draghi talking, was not on my list. Of course, that is precisely what happened.
I’ve read what Mario said a number of times, I think there is no substance to his words.
“The ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough”
I’m reminded of an article I wrote more than two years ago titled, Sarkozy Will Get “Stuffed” (link). The occasion was a stupid remark made by then French President Nicholas Sarkozy regarding some new measures that would, once and for all, end the run on the bond markets of Europe:
“We will confront speculators mercilessly. They will know once and for all what lies in store for them.”

Bypassing Government Roadblocks To Your Personal Prosperity

That the US government's activities as a share of GDP have gone from well under 10% at the beginning of the last century to over 40% today – and will go over 50% by the time Obamacare is fully implemented – makes it clear that this country is now operating on principles that run completely contrary to those that promote success and economic well-being. The consequence of continuing to operate on this model will be a steady decline in the quality of life for most Americans, while favoring a ruling elite that produces nothing… except more roadblocks.

September: Crunchtime For Europe And Germany

"September will undoubtedly be the crunch time," one senior euro zone policymaker said. "In nearly 20 years of dealing with EU issues, I've never known a state of affairs like we are in now," one euro zone diplomat said this week. "It really is a very, very difficult fix and it's far from certain that we'll be able to find the right way out of it."

The latest scandal du jour seems to be about what is now called LIBORgate. But is it a scandal or is it really just business as usual? And if we don’t know which it is, what does that say about how we organize the financial world, in which $300-800 trillion, give or take, is based on LIBOR? This is actually just the second verse of the old song about derivatives, which is a much larger market. Which of course is a problem that was not solved by Dodd-Frank and that has the potential to once again create true havoc with the markets, whereas LIBOR can only cost a few billion here and there. (Sarcasm intended.)
The problem is the lack of transparency. Why would banks want to reveal how much profit they are making? The last thing they want is transparency. This week I offer a different take on LIBOR, one which may annoy a few readers, but which I hope provokes some thinking about how we should organize our financial world.

Food & Water, Nope. Vaccines, Yep.

by Gianolleni, ZenGardner.com
Talk about a total contrast. This beautiful pictorial rebuke is a first hand encounter with the insane reality of the crippling Gates-backed vaccine push in Africa, against the backdrop of loving individuals taking real action to help alleviate the real problems and needs of their fellow man. I can’t imagine a greater exposé. – Zen
Before I went to Uganda, I knew all about Bill Gates and his billion dollar vaccine campaign. I had read the stories of him going into remote African villages and vaccinating children with the measles vaccine at gunpoint. I knew about the thousands of cases of children in India becoming paralyzed after receiving his polio vaccines. I’ve researched the African children coming down with the mysterious “nodding” disease immediately after vaccination. I’ve listened to the interviews where Bill Gates calls his vaccine campaign “population control”. But like most things, we don’t really believe it until we actually see it. During my time in Uganda, I saw it.
It wasn’t 10 minutes down the road from the airport, that I saw all the big banners hanging. Bill Gates vaccine campaign had been in town the week earlier. Big posters reading “Any child under 5 can come get free polio & measles vaccines”. Woo-hoo. Nice, I thought. Well at least that happened the week before. I did not want to witness it. And then I witnessed it.
We spent one of our days in a village in a remote area, at the home of a young lady who raises 26 orphaned kids. She also runs a school with about 96 kids.

U.S. Drought Disaster Depression Agricultural Commodities Crops Report

by: Richard Mills, The Market Oracle:
Because of the worst drought since 1988 the U.S. Department of Agriculture declared a federal disaster area in almost one-third of all the counties in the United States – more than 1,300 counties covering 29 states, the largest disaster declaration ever made by the USDA. Only in the 1930s and 1950s has a drought covered more land.
The United States Drought Monitor shows 88 percent of corn, and 87 percent of soybean crops are in drought-stricken regions. The map above shows the counties affected.
“We just had a crop report today, which indicated a significant reduction in corn production as well as bean production, lower forecast for wheat, soybean, soybean oil, soybean meal, and corn, lower forecast for milk, beef, pork, broilers, and turkey. And it’s obvious that weather is having an impact on the estimates of crops. Despite the fact that we have more acreage planted this year, we still are looking at significant reductions, and despite the fact that we may even with the corn estimates, as they have been reduced, would still have the third largest crop of corn in our history, nearly 13 billion bushels, and a very large soybean crop. We need to be cognizant of the fact that drought and weather conditions have really impacted and affected producers around the country.” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack

Anonymous Targets Anaheim PD, While ‘Protesters’ Ramp Up Violence

by Activist Post

Anaheim residents have had increasing distrust of their local police. A series of 7 suspicious shootings with 5 deaths, culminated recently with the death of unarmed 24-year-old Manuel Diaz who, recent evidence showed, was shot in the leg and the back of the head.
Just one day later, Joel Acevedo, who was allegedly in handcuffs, was also gunned down; while residents from a nearby apartment building were targeted by police flashlights in an apparent effort to stifle any video footage being taken of the incident.
The chaos that ensued has shown no signs of abating; and now Anonymous has directly attacked Police Chief John Welters, initiating a new operation that calls for citizens to rise up en masse.

High Stakes in Syria

by Stephen Lendman, SJLendman.Blogspot.com:
The region’s fate hangs in the balance. Perhaps much more. The potential ugly reality is chilling.
Make no mistake. Washington orchestrated months of bloodbath. Obama officials bear full responsibility. They were last year against Libya. They are currently as violence wracks the country.
The battle for Aleppo now rages. Syrian forces are going all out to free the city from Western sponsored death squads. They’re battling thousands of hired killers.
They’re in neighborhoods. They use human shields. They target pro-Assad loyalists. They murder them. Washington’s strategy dictates it. Wrongfully blaming Assad advances the ball closer to war.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has much to answer for. She’s playing a pro-Western role. She issued several scathing reports. They pointed fingers the wrong way.
On July 27, she expressed “deep alarm” for what’s happening to civilians. She blamed Assad for ongoing violence, saying:
“The Government has the prime responsibility to protect civilians from all forms of violence.”

UN fails to agree on Arms Trade Treaty, opts for possible vote by the end of the year

by Madison Ruppert, Activist Post
Thankfully, it appears that the controversial United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) has been stopped in its tracks, at least for now.
Negotiations have been held between 170 countries from July 2 to July 27, 2012 and yet they were not even able to make a decision on a draft version of the treaty which some say could have threatened the Second Amendment.
However, the treaty, which needed to be adopted by consensus (meaning it would only take one country to veto the deal), has not been shot down completely.
There is still the possibility of further discussions and a draft arms trade treaty very well could be brought before the 193-nation UN General Assembly.
Indeed, some diplomats are clearly confident that this treaty will be put in place, essentially saying it is just a matter of time until it happens.
“We feel that we could have agreed (a treaty). It is disappointing that more time is needed. But an arms-trade treaty is coming – not today – but soon. We’ve taken a big step forward,” said a spokesperson for the British delegation.

Who’s Winning the War On You?

by Zen Gardner, ZenGardner.com
We’re at war, and the enemy is us – a conscious, responsive humanity. World dominion cannot succeed with an awake, empowered population. We’re at a crucial time in history and right now the air is crackling with programmed anticipation, and that’s just how they planned it.
It’s all about our minds and hearts. The propaganda and staged events are triggers to shut you down. We need to see through all this fabricated bullshit.
Showtime – The Bigger the Lie the Better: We’re witnessing the most massive peacetime militarization ever undertaken. Using false flags, false alerts and false enemies, the United States and England are leading the charge into a technological police state that far surpasses Orwell’s nightmare or Huxley’s drugged Brave New World.
Not only is the over-the-top London Olympics psychically begging for an incident while Israel spews their shrill “Iran’s gonna do it” campaign, but the US is wildly cranking up for a vicious war on its own people based on a completely fabricated series of false alerts and accusations used to justify their metastacizing Fascist “homeland security” gridlock.
Now fully augmented by the military a la the Olympics idiocy. Get their drift? All they need now is the right “justification” to make it permanent. They’ve painted humanity into a psychological corner. 9/11 on steroids coming up. Prepare accordingly.

AGENDA 21-Style Tyranny: Oregon Man Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail — for Collecting Rainwater on His Property

By Kendra Alleyne, CNS News:
A rural Oregon man was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in jail and over $1,500 in fines because he had three reservoirs on his property to collect and use rainwater.
Gary Harrington of Eagle Point, Ore., says he plans to appeal his conviction in Jackson County (Ore.) Circuit Court on nine misdemeanor charges under a 1925 law for having what state water managers called “three illegal reservoirs” on his property – and for filling the reservoirs with rainwater and snow runoff.
“The government is bullying,” Harrington told CNSNews.com in an interview Thursday.
“They’ve just gotten to be big bullies and if you just lay over and die and give up, that just makes them bigger bullies. So, we as Americans, we need to stand on our constitutional rights, on our rights as citizens and hang tough. This is a good country, we’ll prevail,” he said.
The court has given Harrington two weeks to report to the Jackson County Jail to begin serving his sentence.

Trans-Pacific Partnership: Agenda 21 Meets Global Corporate Takeover

by Susanne Posel, Occupy Corporatism:
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) “is a key trade initiative” that the Obama administration claims is “seeking to support jobs for American workers by boosting American exports to the dynamic Asia-Pacific region, promote manufacturing, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and at the same time, reflect in the agreement important values on key issues such as worker rights and the environment.”
However, the agenda of the TPP is a securitization of customs and border patrol services, telecommunications, corporate competition policy that directly effects immigration, corporate investments, and the addition of intellectual property rights with focus on copyright limitations.
The TPP, held in secret, is in actuality a multi-national trade agreement that seeks to extend intellectual property rights across the globe; creating an international enforcement scheme.

FreedomFest, Rome and Opportunity

by Ron Holland, The Daily Bell:
Are We Rome?
“From a kingdom of gold to one of rust and iron” – Dio Cassius, a Roman consul and noted historian in 180 AD describing the beginning of the decline of the Roman Empire
“Are We Rome?” is the theme for FreedomFest 2013 and an appropriate question every American should ask about the future of the US regardless of which political gang and front man wins the 2012 election. My answer is yes, and America is like the old Roman Empire on steroids. What took decades in Rome to happen can now occur over only a couple of days’ time with the Internet and global communications.
The potential for military conflict, economic disruption or the EU sovereign debt crisis crossing the Atlantic with a corresponding real or preplanned Washington response in hours is frightening. Imagine a few seconds on investment trading platforms in the failing EU today versus the many months required for information to travel from Germany, “Germania,” and France, “Gaul,” in an earlier European empire and you’ll understand what we face in our fast-paced Internet world. In the world economic environment of today the theme could easily change between now and July 2013 from “Are We Rome?” to “Barbarians at the Gates” almost overnight.
